All political eyes are on Philly

I logged a post in May 2011 about this project, and now things are starting to come together.

All political eyes are watching over our city, more specifically in South Philly, to see if the Greater Philadelphia Innovation Cluster (GPIC) can deliver on their promises. Those promises, are as follows:

“… to improve energy efficiency and operability and reduce carbon emissions of new and existing buildings, and to stimulate private investment and quality job creation in the Greater Philadelphia region, the larger Mid-Atlantic region, and beyond. The GPIC will focus on full spectrum retrofit of existing average size commercial and multifamily residential buildings.”

Needless to say, this group has their hands full.

Over the next 2 years, the GPIC will design and build their first project at Building 661. This project may be a make-or-break for the group and will certainly show whether or not the $129M investment was worth it.

New hotel planned for Navy Yard

A Marriott Courtyard is looking to break ground as the first hotel at Philadelphia’s rapidly expanding Navy Yard business park.

Companies like Urban Outfitters and GlaxoSmithKline will both greatly benefit from having a nice, new hotel within walking distance of their corporate headquarters’. It’s also more good news for a growing area of Philadelphia.

The goal is to have it up and running by 2013.

“Lower South” Philadelphia

I found this article to be pretty intriguing.

There is a group of people in Philadelphia currently working on the future and healthy well-being of Lower South Philadelphia. Where exactly is Lower South Philadelphia? In other words, what are its boundaries?

This area includes the following sections/neighborhoods:

  1. Navy Yard
  2. South Philadelphia Port
  3. Sports Complexes
  4. Packer Park
  5. Grays Ferry (a portion of it)

There are only 5,000 residents in this entire area of Philadelphia, but 15,000 people work here; that makes it important. Read on to learn more.
