Drexel continues its expansion

Right in the heart of their campus.

This project has been in the works for some time now, and has actually already broken ground). It will fill a big void on an active block (right across the street from the Drexel Book Store and Mandell Theater).

Once labeled as one of “America’s Ugliest Campuses,” the school has literally transformed an outdated, park-less, concrete area into a modern, green, world-class student town. Not only have these large investments brought in more students, but they have also encouraged lots of off-campus development by private investors to keep those students in the neighborhood.

Jim Fry has truly picked up right where the late Constantine Papadakis left off.

Another supermarket for West Girard Ave?

Hmmm.

I guess you can never have too many supermarkets for dense neighborhoods that are growing fast and changing for the better (such as the ones that surround this proposed development).

If you’re not familiar with the area, this will be the 3rd new supermarket within the last few years; all within a 2 mile radius. Considering you’re right in between Temple University and Fishtown/Northern Liberties, I guess another supermarket could be viable; we’ll just have to wait and see.

An “Oasis” at Penn

The University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia is not only the largest private employer in the entire city, but it’s also the second largest in all of PA. That’s pretty impressive for a school.

A few years ago, Penn came out with a plan for both the university and the city called “Penn Connects” (check it out when you have a moment). Penn Park is one such part of that plan to help connect University City to Center City.

The next time you drive on I-76/Schuylkill Expressway (East or West), look to the right (going East) or left (going West) by the new South Street Bridge and you will see Penn’s new park; it’s pretty awesome.
